Hambantota
Production of salt is the major industry in this area. Behind the coastal dunes are the man made salt lakes.

Bundala Sanctuary
Wetland area of the lagoons and inter-tidal mud flats, with flocks of flamingo’s ideal for bird watching.

 

Yala National ParkYala National Park
Has different landscapes including a coastal strip with dune barriers and lagoon, an expanse of open grassland dotted with scrubs and natural groups of rocks rising up out the landscape. Wildlife includes elephants, leopards, bears, jackal, wild buffalo, mongoose, crocodile, monkeys, deer and many more species of bird. Tours through the park are by jeep safari.

Ratnapura District
Centre of the gem mining industry. Among the rice paddies can be found the gem mines. In the town is the National Museum with gem collections.

Sinharaja Forest
An evergreen tropical forest, 20 miles inland from Galle. This World Heritage site can only be toured on foot with a forest official on a wide variety of nature trails. The canopy reaches 120 – 150 ft above the forest floor.

Uda Walawe National Park
Known for its large herds of elephants and numerous birds of prey which can be seen by jeep safari through the open grass land and teak forest.
